ACL Management

About Non-surgical ACL management

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is critical for maintaining the rotational stability of the knee. In the past, it was considered essential to undergo reconstruction of this ligament in order to return to sports or activities involving pivoting-type movements. However, there is increasing evidence indicating that the ligament has the capacity to heal under the right conditions. If the meniscus and cartilage are intact, along with various other criteria, you may be eligible to consider this non-surgical alternative.

Although surgery has traditionally been regarded as the gold-standard approach for managing an ACL rupture, spontaneous healing of ACLs are known to occur, and many people continue to play high level sport even if this does not heal. Regardless of whether an ACL tear is left completely alone, a bracing protocol to aim for non-surgical healing is employed, or traditional surgical ACL reconstruction is undertaken, appropriate strength and conditioning always form a necessary part of the treatment plan.
