Meet Dr Duncan Walker

Biography

Dr Duncan Walker currently serves as the Team Doctor for multiple professional sports teams, including the Adelaide Crows AFLW, Adelaide 36’ers, Adelaide Lightning, and the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Prior to his current roles, Walker built a comprehensive background working with the SANFL West Torrens Eagles, Adelaide Crows Men’s AFL Program, SA State U18 and U16 teams, A-League Soccer teams, boxing, martial arts events, and notably contributed to several international tours, including the World Cup T20 in Hong Kong, alongside events involving the Matilda’s, Kookaburra’s, and the Young Socceroo’s.

With specialist qualifications from the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (FACSEP), along with a medical degree and fellowship in General Practice (FRACGP), Dr Walker maintains a keen focus on utilising exercise and non-surgical approaches as primary methods for addressing prevalent issues like osteoarthritis, as well as managing acute injuries. This expertise alongside both diagnostic and interventional ultrasound, enables quick and precise diagnosis of pathology and therefore optimising rehabilitation guidelines, as well as allowing for appropriate interventions when necessary.

Dr Walker’s ongoing areas of interest encompass non-surgical management of various musculoskeletal acute injuries, overuse problems, osteoarthritis, and injectables such as hyaluronic gels, cortisone, and others. He particularly dedicates himself to applying these management techniques to support a diverse range of professional and casual athletes, aiding them in maintaining optimal health, performance and preventing injuries.

What is a Sports and Exercise Physician?

Sports and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) are specialised doctors trained to effectively manage musculoskeletal injuries and health promotion. Their goal is to optimise function, minimise disability and reduce the amount of time individuals spend away from sports, work, or school. To attain an ACSEP fellowship, doctors must undergo at least 7 additional years of post medical school education, along with various examinations and research requirements.
